Millimeter to Gauge Conversion Chart:
In Europe we tend to measure the part of the jewellery that sits inside the piercing in millimetres (mm), in North America they tend to use gauges (g) or inches.
The gauge system has been in place for hundreds of years and was first created to measure the thickness of wire. The gauge number was created by how many holes the wire was pulled through. Wire was made thinner by being pulled through smaller and smaller holes which is why the thinner the wire, the higher the gauge number.
Once we get to 00g (10mm) we run out of gauge numbers and then measure in fractions of an inch.
